James and Ellie Carr
My husband, James, and I serve in discipleship and orphan care in Guatemala.  We work primarily within a privately owned and operated children's home that cares for about fifty abused, neglected, and orphaned children ranging toddlers to young adults.  All of the children have been placed within the home by a legal court order, and the home is operated according to federal Guatemalan regulations.  To read about how God lead us to this particular home, click here.
James and I promote the discipleship of children and staff onsite.  It is soul-scrubbing, sanctifying, sometimes heartbreaking, but fulfilling to serve the kids and caregivers living at here.  We often think we are teaching them, but learn so much in the process (see my post about Thanksgiving).  The orphans here have become part of our family.
While managing spiritual growth and development, we work together with local churches to coordinate events and activities to get the children involved and learning at a deeper level.  On a daily basis, we disciple children and their caregivers on a one-on-one basis.  By living onsite with the children, we have the opportunity to really get to know their hearts and challenge them to grow in their faith in Christ.  We take joy in coordinating and leading weekly small discipleship groups for the preteen and teenage kids as well as meeting with staff and children one-on-one to meet them where they are, and walk through struggles together.
In addition to counseling and pastoral care duties at Fundaniños, we also work with other organizations within Guatemala to promote quality orphan care, and encourage change for the better within homes.  We do our best to raise awareness within our local church of current ways to get involved in orphan care such as through, being a mentor to a child, fostering, or praying for children and their specific needs.  In our years in Guatemala, we've learned that we alone cannot be the heroes, but when we work together with the Body of Christ to be a small part of what God is doing, we can make a change.   In short, each day is a different sort of crazy, but we wouldn't have life any other way!  If you have any specific questions, recommendations or resources regarding what we do, please contact us.  We would love to hear from you!  To God be the glory for all of our actions, commitments, and efforts!
